One of the world’s leading messaging app,Viber ,which has more than 711 million unique users and over 500 million application downloads from Google store has announced an end-to-end encryption across all devices.
This comes barely two weeks after its competitor WhatsApp announced the same across all networks
An end to end encryption means that your conversation with any party cannot be accessed by anyone else but only the two of you. There is no one in a position to decrypt the conversation, including telecom providers and the company that runs the messaging service. It also means that the messaging apps cannot be bound to hand over messaging data even if served with a warrant by authorities demanding access.
“We take our users’ security and privacy very seriously, and it’s critical to us that they feel confident and protected when using Viber,” said Michael Shmilov, COO of Viber.
“Because of this, we have spent a long time working on this latest update to ensure that our users have the most sophisticated security available and maximum control over their communications. We will continue to make this an ongoing priority as digital communication evolves.” He added
In addition to this, Viber also unveiled “Hidden Chats” to allow users to hide specific chats for the main screens so that only users are aware of their existence.
The chats can only be accessed using four digit pin. Users can hide the conversation by tapping on the info screen for a particular chat. It will then ask for a four digit PIN or, for iOS users, provide an option for a fingerprint.
Users will be notified of a message in a Hidden conversation without the text of the message, or who it is from, appearing on the screen.
This is not bi-directional, meaning if one user hides the conversation, nothing will be changed on the recipient’s side.
However, these awesome new features to be available soon will be enjoyed by users who have the latest version of Viber which is v6.0 or higher.
Users who are also using Viber on an iPad, Android tablet or desktop will be prompted to re-connect it to their phone using a QR code.
How to know Encrypted Messages
To be aware if messages are encrypted, you will see a color-coded lock on the right hand side of the screen indicating the level of security.
The Grey Lock, will appear only during an end-to-end encrypted conversation and call where you will see a grey padlock icon. If you tap on this it, it will display a tooltip letting you know that messages sent by the participants are encrypted.
Secondly, you can manually authenticate your contacts by selecting “trusted” on specific contacts hence the selected contact’s authentication key will be monitored for future changes so that users can be certain that they’re talking to the right person at all times.
On this type of chats, a green padlock will display a tooltip letting you know that messages sent by the participants are encrypted and your contact is verified.
Finally is the Red Lock which will function as n alert lock indicating that a user has changed their primary phone to solve this participant needs to be re-trusted. Tapping on the red icon will display a tooltip noting that Viber cannot verify
